photographs by Sampson Lloyd with text by Cameron Brown

Sampson Lloyd takes us on a visit to some 45 of his favourite Scottish castles, from the grandeur of Thirlestane to the almost domestic charm of Glencassley and the picturesque ruins of Eilean Donan, probably Scotland’s most photographed castle. Sam Lloyd has had access to the interiors of many of these castles, often the ancestral homes of the families who built them, and is thus able to show us aspects of castle life hidden from most visitors.

Cameron Brown’s text guides the reader through the development of the Scottish castle, placing it within the timeline of the country’s often turbulent history. There are details of each of the castles photographed, maps showing their locations, and a useful glossary of architectural terms.

Sampson Lloyd has been a professional photographer for many years. Born and raised in the Highlands he now lives in London. Recent books include The Landscape of Scotland (AAPPL) and The Landscape of London (AAPPL).
